Ebay Sales – Warm up sketches

There’s a pile of my warm-up sketches for sale on Ebay. The user name is dghartsales. These are quick pencil warm-ups. Every week new sketches go up. They’re inkable in case you want to have someone ink them.

Snow day sketch

Life here has pretty much come to a standstill thanks to a decent snowfall this weekend. I celebrated by sleeping in (which mean 8am) making breakfast, working on a script outline, and then taking a walk while being pelted with wind and sleet. After 2 weeks of constant work, it was a welcome and needed break from the drawing board. I did manage to sketch a little this evening though.

I know, very uninteresting. Make up a story to go along with it if you want. I imagine that he’s the perfect man for a cigarette ad. Unfortunately, he was born to late and is instead the spokesman for a generic brand of disinfectant wipes.

Another Voltron Study

Spending a little time in the sketchbook this evening. More Voltron, this time playing with markers and color, and trying to figure out how the body is put together. I think I’m getting more of a handle on him. The above sketch was done with sharpie, Prismacolor markers and a white charcoal pencil for highlights.

I spent the last week working on Marvel 70th Anniversary cards, taking some time to slow down and do a little more detailed pieces before the deadline. I’ve slowed down to about 4 cards a day, and I’m really liking the result. I wish I could post them.

The slower and more thoughtful, the better the work. At least in my case.

Voltron Study

I think the last time I drew Voltron I was in the third grade.

That was the year my teacher made me draw in front of the whole 3rd grade onstage for the talent show. Well, that’s not true. I drew beforehand and then just showed my drawings. I had a girl turn the pages for me. It’s the only time I’ve ever had an assistant. I wonder if she’s around. Maybe she can do all my shipping for me now.

Oh, right, Voltron. I’m getting ready to do 20 cards for 5Finity’s Voltron set. I figured it would be a good idea to take a little time to work out how he’s put together. That lion head/face thing is tricky.

Head Study of Girl

In a month I turn another year older. One of the things I’ve learned in the last year is that one way I learn is through repetition.

Drawing 1000+ sketch cards featuring mostly head shots helped me develop my color sense and anatomy. Repetition can be boring, obviously, but there’s no way around it. The point in repetition isn’t excitement. The point is to learn. Over and over and over and over. Then one day you pick up the penci and all that time you spent drawing and studying and studying and drawing pays off.
